Horology is the Science of Time, Timekeepers (Clocks, Watches) and Timekeeping

Professional Background:

My professional background -- and my current job -- is as an Executive Search Consultant, helping corporations find executive talent. I have been with our firm, Egon Zehnder International, or New York Office for over 20 years, first in Zuerich (Switzerland), and since 1980 in New York. I am a Partner in the firm. Our firm is the second largest executive search firm in the world, and by far the most international one, with 56 offices spread over 38 countries. Over time I have served in additional roles as coordinator of the webpresence of the firm, as firm historian, and for many years as the Head Trainer for newly hired consultants.

Horological Background:

My interest in Horology is strictly as a hobbyist and enthusiast rather than professional. I collect clocks (not watches), with abroad range of styles, ages and technical features, the more unusual the better. The early interest was historical and theoretical (e.g. Horological Science), but gradually the tinkering/crafts aspect of clocks caught my fancy. While now doing simple repairs on my own collection in my shop, I still consider myself more knowledgable than skillfull. My horological goal is to progress to the point where I will have built my own clock from scratch -- which has forced me to learn machining and metalworking over the last few years.

I am mainly selftaught through much reading and studying examples in museums, but have also taken Laurie Penmans Clock repair correspondence courses, and over the years the first seven modules of classes at the NAWCC Clock School. I am a member of NAWCC (including Horological Science, Tools, 400 Day clock, Electrical Horology and Education Chapters), AWI, AHS (American Section), Chronometrophilia, Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Chronometrie, Freunde Alter Uhren, AFAHA and BHI. I subscribe to about 28 periodicals dedicated to maerki and timepieces, and lately seem to be spending as much effort collecting horological books as clocks.

I am maintaining "Horology - The Index" as a public service, and also for its first 9 month served together with Gordon Uber as Website co-administrator for the NAWCC site getting them started on the WWW. In 1997 I initiated the NAWCC Members Forum, and served as the monitor for that internet maillist for a year and a half.
